The Art of Distressing Furniture

By Brent Hollenberg

There is a technique in designing furniture that is increasing in popular today and that is, distressing furniture. This technique is when a piece of furniture is made to look charmingly worn out. This design involves a lot of processes. A few of these processes is sanding, priming, painting, staining, and etc.

I will focus the content of this article on four (4) essential processes in furniture distressing. The focus will be on cleaning, sanding, priming, and painting. Read and learn more about distressing furniture in this article.

The very first process that I wanted to discuss is cleaning. As much as it is basic, a lot of designers fail to do this. There is a need to clean your furniture thoroughly before doing any work on it so that the quality of the product will be the best. To clean, use a clean damp cloth. Use soap for greasy and oily surfaces.

The next process is sanding. When sanding furniture, you don't want to go rough. Smoothly go through the surface in such a way that only the old primer and old paint are sanded. Never go all the way to the wood. To ensure his, it's best if you use a fine grit sand paper. Also, try doing wet sanding. Wet sanding creates a smoother finish compared to dry sanding.

Another process is applying a prime. Priming your furniture is indispensably important before you paint. Priming will ensure better quality of your result furniture. Also, use light colored primer so you can just add more if you want it darker. Finally, keep in mind to use oil based primer for oil based paint and water based primer for water based paint.

One last process I wanted to share is painting. When painting, I suggest using water based paint. Water based paint has no odor, fast drying, and is good for outdoor furniture because it won't fade quickly even after being exposed to the sun.
